Komala - Santhosh Echikkanam

Santhosh Echikanam got Kerala Sahithya Acadamy Award in 2008 for the story Komala.

I have been fascinated by the creativity of the author through the story Komala, and Roadil Palikkenta Niyamangal. He tried to explain the common incidents happening around us through these stories in a down to earth fashion.

In Komala Santhosh Echikanam recount a common man named Kundoor Viswan, who had been a surety to get 50,000 rupees from Velloor Service Sahakarana Bank for his childhood friend Sudakaran. Later, the gullible Viswan came to know that the amout accumulated to 90,345 and Sudakaran did not paid a single installment. After the final notice from the bank to Viswan, as he was the first surety, bank took a decision to auction his home. Finally, he put a notice board infront of his home saying "On August 15th 12AM he and his family would commit suicide due to debt caused". This attracted media attention and a live conference happenend in News Times participated by Bank Secretary:Madhavan Nair, Psychologist:Dr. C Nanda Kumar, Officer from National Crime Record Research Bureau:Alex Punnose and Advocate:Fathima Begam and Kundoor Viswan.

The narration is so lucid that, which is happening with many common man.

In "Roadil Palikkenta Niyamangal", Echikanam silhouette how squabbles between spouse will lead to divorce through the life of Ravichandran and Akhila. Afterwards, while learning driving from Ramakrishnan, a driving school instructor, Ravichandran realized how the married life could be lead smooth in analog to driving. Even, in the absence of Akhla, through allegorical narration: the Utensils, Washing Machine, Fridge all are making converstaion to Ravichandran about Akhila. Eventually, Ravichandran realized the importance of marriage. Consequently, they withdrew the divorce petition.

It was a rare and peculiar way of creativity.
