Sufi Paranja Kathakal-K.P Ramanunni

Pathummayude-Aadu

I never seen Vaikom Muhammed Basheer. However, we may meet such great doyen through their books. Their personality is imbibed in their literatures. When we read, we should approach such books with great respect and they will talk to us. We will get the blessings of such writers. I do not know, how to respect a great writer, without reading his books??? May be, I should admit that, that is the only platform, a small reader like me may get.

More than a writer, Basheer was a great human being.

Why I should give such introduction about Basheer!!! Pathummayude Aadu, is the real life story of Basheer itself. It is all about a Goat which Basheer's Sister Pathumma had. It is full of humour with real life of a Malayali in olden days. Basheer is always a favourite writer for most Malayalees.

If God come and ask me, whether I would like to take any thing with me before going with Him, I would say "Allow me to take all Basheer's book's, so that I could read for You and make You aware of Your greatest creation".

Kottayam17-Unni R

How will we say which one is the best out of all the 8 short stories. Each one is better than the best.

Picturization of each character in his story is deeply felt. His Kottayam Dialect(Eastern Kerala) is making this literature very particularly consuming.

I liked "Boothavistan" the most. In this the character Krishnan would like to scream at public places, at official meeting, at Parents-Teachers asscociation, at party procession due to behavioral disorders which is unknown even to his wife. He is communicating the same to his wife Padmini that his colleague Rajendran has some obscure psychic disturbance by concealing his fix. The same he is putting across to Rajendra that his neighborhood Professor has certain pshycological unbalance. He is also consulting a pshchiatrist, duped into thinking his friend Rajendran has specific psychiatic problem. Later he himself finding a solution to his disorder by being busy in life.

This book also command attention due to its quality of expression of thoughts. His dare picturization of each character is highly appreciable.

Agniyum Kathakalum-Sithara S

Sithara.S in her literature the main playable character is female.

It is clear in the story Agni, that Priya had been raped by three men and she told to one of them in a dominian voice, you are not enough to give pleasure to a lady and she was in love with one of the guys Ravi who raped her.

In another Story she is narrating Madri who is a lesbian who loved Maria more than her husband.

She gave the role of psychopath to Sairah who killed her father, because she loved him very much. She killed who ever she liked very much. Even she killed her friend Maya by stabbing on her chest and promised her to be a martyr for her love.

Most of her creations in this literature are strong, powerful, tenacious, tough, stalwart females which would make any man loose his masculinity.

Ave Maria-K R Meera

K R Meera is proving her caliber as a writer by astounding revelation of stories in a singular fashion. She is narrating a totally unique love story of Noorjahan and Sathyan. Sathyan is a killer, who happened to enter Noor's room to kill her, however, when he came to know she did not have limbs, he left her room. However, for Noorjahan, Satyan was the first man who dared to enter her room. They both married and Satyan escaped from Jail later to meet Noorjahan.

Ente-Priyakathal-T.Padamanaban

He is an iconic figure of Malayalam literature. Every story of his takes us to dwell fitfully on the past, on a delightful present and on a prosperous future. The veteran writer makes us to wish that each incident in the story should have happened atleast in our dreams.

One of the most fasinating story is "Nidi Chala sugama". This is the life of Ramanadan who was loyal and committed to the company. More than a technically expert engineer, he was a good human being. Once he recommended one of the best subordinate worker for the promotion and the management recommended who was ineligible and unfit for that post. Immediately Ramanadan resigned his job. Eventually, when the company was in alarming condition to go shutdown due to technical issues which could not be even mend by the technical experts from foreign countries, Ramanadhan came for the rescue. This saved the image of the company from laying off employees and closing down the company. However, he did not accepted the ransom consultation fees which he had been offered as a token of recognition. At the end of the story, he promised to the officials, he would extend his help in the future too, however not for the money.

The books is the collection of his own favourite stories. As an amateur reader, we will loose in the stygian reaches of the deep thoughts.

Pandavapuram-Sethu

Pandavapuranam is an inscrutable work of art.

Sethu Madhavan through his genious writing would take any reader to an unknowable and mysterious path of fiction. He is going to extreme lengths in expressing the feeling of female sexuality through the Character Devi. Pandavapuranam is a place created in Devi's mind out of hallucination due to her estrangement and disaffection due to her unfaithful husband who left her in self-exile. In that imaginary world of Pandavapuranam, she attracts the paramour and pulverize him in avenge. In one of her extreme delusion, her husband is revisiting her. However, with her preconceived morbid behaviour and tenebrous attitude, she offered him the role of a paramour and be last in the queue of such illicit lovers.

The novel must be pioneer in the list of fiction with enigmatic appearance it gives to the readers.

Higuitta - N.S.Madhavan

This books is a collection of seven short stories and the readers will undergo the transmission of feelings. His efficient and systematic way of writing the Malayalam language conveys the message in an accurate, clear and pellucid manner. His writings with palpable minute details along with pass back and forth as well as interweaving incidents and dialogue while narrating the short stories exemplifies his aristic skill.

The Story Higuita is one such story of lacing the 1990 FIFA World Cup where in Higuita's blunder enabled put Camerron though quarter-finals with the story of a tribal girl Lucie from the clutches of the trafficker Jabbar. These two different incidents were entwine through, a priest named Father Geevarghese, a protagonist, who created a mental imagination of Football and Goal Keepers. Later, the Father give up his cassock and saving Lucie by doing different style of kicks in the trafficker Jabbar's body which made Jabbar to went on exile.

I mellowed each story, which is mellifluous, as if watching a slow motion picture without loosing the distinguishable substance which would make any reader gentle by age inaddition to its richness and full with experience. The reader would be warmed and relaxed once he finished this short story Higuitta.

Manjaveyil Maranam - Benyamin

"Manjaveyil Maranangal" is the latest Novel by Benyamin, published by D.C books.

The Novel seems to be detective and happenend in Diego Gracia, Chennai and Kerala. The Novel also delineate the family history of Andrew Perera and different believes exists in Christianity.

Kristi Perera who born and brought up in Diego Gracia, studied 3 years of his education in Trivandrum, Kerala. One fine day, he happened to meet his ex-classmate, Jaseentha while having coffee in one of the coffee shops in Diego Gracia. While he was enquiring about all of his other ex-classmates whereabouts, a man shot dead in the same shop. Immediately he had been realized that he was also one of his classmates, Senthil. Kristi started investigation on Senthil's mysterious death. Kristi documented all incident as nine parts and send it to different people till his disappearance. The first part of the document was send to Benyamin. The whole book is the investigation on the disappearance of Kristi Perera and also taking each reader through his unique style of awesome writing how the author and his friends are collecting different parts of Kristi's documents from various parts of the world through the diligent mission they have undertaken to make the whole document a full Novel, which was also Kristi's wish.

Quality Of the Writer's Soul is reflected through out his books "Aadujeevitham" and "Manjaveyil-Maranamgal". More than that His commitment, dedication and above all his sincere approach to these books while writing, all converged together in these books. I have been admired by the dimension of his thought at each line of his novels. To be frank,Before getting rid of shock he has given to me through "Aadujeevitham",I am really in another shock which he has given to me through his writing "Manjaveyil-Maranamgal"

I strongly believe each writer is created from an instance(or 1/1000……infinity) of God's thought. Benyamin has been created out of one such thought of HIM. Through his latest novel,we can understand,to what extend a writer could create miracles through his unique style of writings. Through his writing,I am sure,Hundreds would take initiative to habituated to reading. When they realize, they(books) are the best friend, they would choose the path to find thousands of such good friends(books). Out of such voracious reading, 100 will be aspired to become good writers and a few should become a committed writers. Benyamin is creating miracle. Really. It is true.

Spectacular Cover Design by N.Ajayan should make this book a very attractive with the picture of Diego Gracia's Flag

This is a high rated book which everybody must read.

Komala - Santhosh Echikkanam

Santhosh Echikanam got Kerala Sahithya Acadamy Award in 2008 for the story Komala.

I have been fascinated by the creativity of the author through the story Komala, and Roadil Palikkenta Niyamangal. He tried to explain the common incidents happening around us through these stories in a down to earth fashion.

In Komala Santhosh Echikanam recount a common man named Kundoor Viswan, who had been a surety to get 50,000 rupees from Velloor Service Sahakarana Bank for his childhood friend Sudakaran. Later, the gullible Viswan came to know that the amout accumulated to 90,345 and Sudakaran did not paid a single installment. After the final notice from the bank to Viswan, as he was the first surety, bank took a decision to auction his home. Finally, he put a notice board infront of his home saying "On August 15th 12AM he and his family would commit suicide due to debt caused". This attracted media attention and a live conference happenend in News Times participated by Bank Secretary:Madhavan Nair, Psychologist:Dr. C Nanda Kumar, Officer from National Crime Record Research Bureau:Alex Punnose and Advocate:Fathima Begam and Kundoor Viswan.

The narration is so lucid that, which is happening with many common man.

In "Roadil Palikkenta Niyamangal", Echikanam silhouette how squabbles between spouse will lead to divorce through the life of Ravichandran and Akhila. Afterwards, while learning driving from Ramakrishnan, a driving school instructor, Ravichandran realized how the married life could be lead smooth in analog to driving. Even, in the absence of Akhla, through allegorical narration: the Utensils, Washing Machine, Fridge all are making converstaion to Ravichandran about Akhila. Eventually, Ravichandran realized the importance of marriage. Consequently, they withdrew the divorce petition.

It was a rare and peculiar way of creativity.

However, he missed that too. At 3:30 pm, he had been lend 2 anas by a boy, who were working as a servant in Bank clerk Krishna Pilla's house, when he reached the author for a match stick. The author kept one ana for later purpose and with remaining one ana he ordered for Dosa, Tea and Beedi (local cigar). At night 9 pm when he laid for sleep with an empty stomach, he could not. Later, he stealed food from near by room. Through out the story, the author underscored the starvation many people were undergoing then. EMS-um Penkuttiyum (EMS And The Lady)

The book "E.M.S and The Girl" published by D C books, is a collection of 9 short stories by the same author of famous book "Aadujeevitham". The Design and the naming of the book attract any Malayali (Language spoken by populace from Kerala) readers. It hardly takes 4 to 5 hours continuous reading to finish this 116 pages book.

In this book too Benyamin kept his natural humour in two short stories "Vasthu Purushan" and "Tao Manushyan(The Tao Man))". In "Vasthu Purushan" Ramesh who did not believe in any superstitions became a blind believer of it by his wife's(Geetha) influence; who believed strongly, all unfortunate happenings were due to improper Vastu(Vastu Sastram is a technology which has a set of rules to construct buildings). In the other story, "Tao Manushyan" in which, the wife was not happy with the rented house they were staying and finding faults in each and everything, just to persuade the husband to shift the house. However, husband found answers to all those from books onTao Phylosophy(Taoism).

The story "EMS-um Penkuttiyum(E.M.S and The Girl)" had a good starting. However, this does not any thing to do with E.M.S(Veteran communist leader E M S Namboodiripad, who was elected chief minister when Communist Party won the 1957 assembly elections in Kerala). Jose who was narrating an incident to his friends, while having drinks with his friends, which happened in his life in US, by accidently meeting a Lady name "Pakavoo Sayang" in his car after returning from shopping. This strange lady liked to be call "Pakavoo", who was not clear of her own origin, creating troubles to Jose who is a jobless man and supported by the mercy of his wife “Sini”. “Pakavoo Sayang”, who born and brought in US, eloped with his boy friend since she did not like the orthodox way of marriage which her parents ardently believed in. “Jose” told "Pakavoo" as if he was EMS to stop her from creating any further trouble(Jose did not want to reveal his real name). However, the end could have improved with some twist to make it more interesting.

The most I liked is story:"Kumari Devi". That was bit heart touching. “Chanku” had been looking for a maid for “Gopi Ettan” and “Geeta Auty” At last they got "Suninya Shakya Devi" as their maid. Later the story revealed that, she hailed from Nepal who had been promoted to the level of Goddess Devi under Kumari Devi Tradition at the age of 4 followed by different levels of test to confirm by Pundits( The Scholars), if she had those rare power of Goddess and when she reached 8 years and the day she had to be canonized, she deprived her post due to the blood seen on her body since she reached puberty. Later, she received the loath of all her “Kith and Kins” and choosing the life of a maid.

"Oru(Mun) Kalla Kadathu Karante Athmakada(The Autobiography of a (Old) smuggler)": The story is about "Beeranikka" who is an adorable smuggler in ancient times who used to bring perfumes and VCD and transistors from Gulf Countries. The story ends with telling, had there been a "Beeranikka" in this modern age he would not have been so adorable since those things he used to smuggled, are easily available in modern times.

"Javed Enna Mujahid (Javed:The Mujahid)" is wonderful story of a Javed who had been victimized as a terrotist and even the police released him as innocent, still the people out cast him as terrorist. This story also narrates the migration of Kashmiri Pandits.

"Gezante Kallukal(Stones of Gesan) " shows the supression Palestinians are undergoing.

" Aadis Ababa ", which also delineates the corruption and reasons of poverty in Ethiopia.

The Other story " Randu Pattalakkaar Mattoru Arabikkathayil(Two army men in another Arabic Tale) " show the fear and hope of each soldier under deputation in Iraq after the war and how they made pre-emptive attack as a way of self-protection and how many innocent has been protect by GOD!!!(As Edward Said).

Each Story starts with great interest, however, somewhere we are loosing out the ends which writer himself admitted at the end of story "Javed Enna Mujahudeen(Javed:The Mujahid)"—That is the problem of second hand stories”.

‘Aadujeevitham’ (Goat Days:English Translation:will publish on April 2012) a Malayalam novel:written by Benyamin, has received many accolades : 2009 Kerala Sahithya Akademi Award; Abudabhi Shakthi Award; K.A Kodungaloor Award; Dubai Pravasi Book Trust Award; Norka Roots Pravasi Award; Youth India Award 2011 etc… This acclaimed novel will be translating to English by Penguin Books as "Goat Days" by April 2012. The Tamil translation is published with "Adujeevitham" , while Hindi translation is at its preliminary stages and will be publishing with "Zindaki Bakri Ki" by next year.

The life of Najeeb who had been to Riyad and conned(For Najeeb it is still a mystery if he had been conned or taken/kidnapped for a wrong Visa) and considered Batha Police Station as heaven rather than his Arbab’s place (Najeeb’ Boss and who was the Owner of Masra). The novel makes us to think, what we may do when we have been isolated into a dessert. Through out his life at dessert Najeeb realised the importance of Water. Ultimately, the books underscore the importance of Freedom . Later Najeeb and Hakeem trying to escape from the dessert with the help of Ibrahim Ghadri and that is another journey we will make while reading “Aadujeevitham”. We will be taking our soul through nuance feeling and at its different level when we have been introduced Goats in Masra and its life, Sainu(wife of Najeeb), Umma(Mother of Najeeb), Ibrahim Ghadri(A saviour for Najeeb), Kunjikka(Later Najeeb is reaching here).

The Novel gives a good introduction by itself by the quote “The life which we have not experienced is only a Fiction to us”. Later, the book is dedicating to Najeeb, Hakeem and for all the Souls who died out of thirst in dessert. This gives the impression the Novel is of full of Thought Provoking Facts. Later, the reader must be in a curious excitement to know how the novel is going to take its turn in each page and how the climax would be like due to its natural blend of humour and the fact it narrates. The style at which Benyamin delineate is quite unique and that is why he is stand out among writers. We will have a different experience once we finished this book and while on the journey it takes us to different relam.

We must recommend this book highly for all those voracious readers and who have been dreaming to make reading as their hobby or activity. This will definitely inculcate the reading habit in everybody.

The work of K.Shereef(Illustrations), Rajesh Chalode (Cover Design) should be appreciated for making this book very attractive.
